A guide to Gotland in summer

Published: 20 july, 2018

”It’s time to head east, to the historical island of sea stacks in the Baltic sea and the Swedes highest adored vacay location, Gotland.”

Midnatt has grown a lot during this first year and when we come to think about it we have retailers in many of Sweden’s most beautiful summer spots. So we decided to ask some of these well selected stores about their own summer must do’s around their hoods.

It’s time to head east, to the historical island of sea stacks in the Baltic sea and the Swedes highest adored vacay location, Gotland. This time we asked for guidance from Emelie Nygren store owner at GAD and Ulla Murat, owner of Akantus, both stores located in the town of Visby and selected vendors of Midnatt.

A guide to Emelie Nygren’s Gotland

G.A.D, shop
At GAD you will find our own fine product line of handmade furniture along with a wide range of interior details appealing for both body and mind. It’s situated in Sweden’s smallest and nicest mall H10, a visit there is a must when shopping in Visby. Our philosophy is built on the ambition to avoid quick consumption and instead choose things that respect the environment, now and for a long time ahead.

Fabriken Furillen, hotel and restaurant
Eat, sleep and meet in nature. Furillen is a huge peninsula with a wild landscape characteristic for the Island. At this beautiful spot you can stay the night, enjoy a picnic basket by the sea or just… be. Also, the service is unbelievably good.

Grogarnsberget, coastline
The most fantastic coastline stretches between Herrvik and Katthammarsvik. We love to park right on the beach and camp in the car. On our way there we pick up some lovely fish at the smokehouse in Sysne.

Stelors lada, live music
Every summer there’s a great line up of musicians playing live at the barn of Stelors hotel. Those concerts always give me the ultimate summer vibes! I live close by so I’m lucky enough to hear the music even when I’m not actually there. Last year I saw Frida Hyvönen and this season I would love to go to the concert of Sarah Klang & Christian Kjellvander, July 26th. This year I’ve read that they serve food that normally would have been thrown away by the big grocery stores. How great is that?!

Akantus, shop
In a charming turn of the century building on Sankt Hansplan right in medieval Visby you’ll find our store Akantus. We mix contemporary design with craftsmanship from the Island and vintage finds with a story to tell. We are always open, by the way.

Gula huset och Café Foajé, cafes
Gula Huset, The yellow house, is my all time favourite café in Visby. A wonderful little place, right by the botanical garden. Everything served is homebaked. You pour your own coffee from a pretty Bernadotte can, the rest will be served at the table in the lovely backyard. A cozy feature in today’s ‘serve yourself culture’. Another great and unexpected spot for coffee is Café Foajé at Almedalsbiblioteket. In the modern library you’ll find delicious pastries with a perfect view over everyday life in Almedalen.

Djupvik, hotel and restaurant
As a refreshing contrast to medieval Visby, take a road trip to Eksta and have something to eat at Djupvik Hotell & Restaurang. Great food, contemporary architecture and beautiful views over Stora and Lilla Karlsö. Go by car to enjoy the entire coast of Eksta, incredibly beautiful!

Krönet, bar
The best bar in Visby is also the one with the best view of the incredible sunset! A cold drink in the golden light from the sea is as striking every time.
